For some reason, I am thinking about what happens after the end of the story. So uhh... Here we go, I guess:
Emily wakes up. Shes laying in bed, looking out of the panorama window - what an odd déjà-vu in a world that is so different.
Annie and Michelle are sitting on the floor playing cards. <description of a part of Nova Metropolis that has been damaged by the impact>
Michelle nods towards her, Annie turns around.
"Good morning. How was your night?"
"Awful. Everything is so heavy."
She pushes herself up and looks around.
"Where are the others?"
Michelle grabs a radio and talks into it:
"Jack, shes awake."
Annie leans back to look out of the window. Emily looks in the same direction and momentarily sees the glint of a mirroring object being held
into the sunlight from one of the other buildings.
"What are thy doing over there?"
Annie shakes her head.
"I forgot to turn my radio off yesterday. Cue Jack waking me up just before dawn - he supposedly heard someone talking."

- The highway through the desert is in very good condition (= not completely buried by sand)
- because of this and them driving through the night, they arrive very early
- exploring Nova Metropolis (basically a time capsule)
- in the evening, they make their way to the roof of a sky scraper (see zz...)

"Good morning, Annie! Pancakes are ready."
Jack takes his hand off her shoulder. She <stützt sich hoch> and looks around. James is driving the bus on a surprisingly very intact
highway. Yesterday's mountains are still visible in the far distance behind them. A seeminly endless desert has taken their place <might
benefit from a description of said desert>. Annie gets up <need more descriptive way of saying that> and goes to the improvised kitchen
area. Jack wakes up Michelle, then he tells James. <bus stops, engine turns off, they all sit down around the table and start to eat,
short mention of what the dogs up to>
"So when are we gonna reach the <mining company> pit?", Michelle asks.
Jack looks at James. James tils his head slightly and shrugs.
"Like five hours ago?"
"Youre kidding."
"Didnt wanna wake you up."
"Uhh..."
He grins.
"Dont worry, I wont drive from here."
"Wait... doesnt that mean that were way ahead of schedule?"
James shrugs again, this time holding up his hands. She turns to Jack:
"How much ahead are we?"
Jack glances at his watch.
"About three hours. But if youre as lucky with the wind as James, well be more ahead by the time we arrive."
"You didnt sleep, did you?"
"Sleep is overrated anyway - but if you allow it, Ill be going to sleep very soon."
<missing section>
The four do quick work of the dishes. Annie washes them, Jack <rinses? Basically, he drags them through a bowl with clean water.> them,
James dries them off, and Michelle puts them away. Jack goes to sleep after that, the others go to the front.
Michelle sits on the drivers seat and turns the key. Nothing happens.
"Oh, yeah, thats been a problem", James remembers. "Can you open the door for a sec?"
He grabs a big wrench and a jumper cable, and heads outside. Michelle and Annie hear him opening some panel in the back of the bus followed
by arcing noises. The engine begins to turn over. Michelle turns the key again. Finally, the engine roars to life. James slams the panel
shut and returns.
<yeah, revision needed, I know>

The escape lander <Lander is probably not the right word. What did they call the landing module of the moon missions?> enters the atmosphere with a jolt.
<Honestly, I have no idea what it is like to reenter the atmosphere. Needs research.>
The displays on the control panel flicker and start showing random symbols. Error messages start scrolling over the monitor until it
blanks.
"Uh oh."
Emily stares at the control panel for a moment trying to think. She grabs her emergency notes and frantically searches for the relevant section.
After finally finding the right page, she presses a few buttons on the keyboard to halt the computer. Then, she flips a bunch of switches to gain manual
control of the lander. Clicking and clanging under the control panel. Looking at the next page of her notes, she realizes that the order has been messed up.
Again, she scrambles through the pages until she finds the next instructions. Wait until the external pressure gauge reads <xyz> and release the heatshield.
She looks at the analog gauges at the top of the panel - there it ts. <less than xyz value>.
The shield detaches with a bang. Emily flips the switch for the fuel pumps, grabs the throttle lever, and pushes it all the way forward. Nothing happens.
She looks back at the notes - did she miss anything? She flips the switch off and on again. "Nononononono..."
