We Have Minecraft At Home

Coming Soon...

This is the section of my website that is dedicated to FOSS-VG. FOSS-VG is the name of a free and open-source Minecraft clone that I have started developing with the help of a friend. It's an acronym of "FOSS Voxel Generator" (FOSS = Free and Open-Source Software). Currently, development is stalled, but I hope to pick it up again once I wrap up some other, more urgent projects.

The main reason I set out on this project is that Microsoft has overstepped the boundaries of what is acceptable in terms of regulating third party servers. They don't get to decide what people can or cannot say on my server - I do that. There is no need to protect the children where there are no children - especially since Microsoft is taking a fundamentally unsuitable approach to do so. Another reason is that I really don't like the artistic direction Minecraft is going in. They seem to be trying their best to turn Minecraft into a silly little game for children instead of the generic sandbox game that it used to be.

As for why I decided to implement my own Minecraft from scratch instead of using a pre-existing clone, it boils down to three factors:

  1. Game compatibility: No other clone that I am aware of is compatible with Minecraft. I want to keep my world save, and I want to - for now - support vanilla Minecraft clients on FOSS-VG servers.
  2. Artistic control: At some point, I want to implement new features that will take FOSS-VG into a different direction making it a different game. Two focus points are going to be its very own brand of magic and technology.
  3. Hardware and software compatibility: I want FOSS-VG to be able to run on more than just x86_64 hardware and operating systems other than Windows, MacOS, and Linux-GNU. ARM is here, RISC-V is coming, and old hardware is often overlooked. And all the users of other UNIX-like systems are being overlooked because Linux-GNU overshadows them all, while adding support for other systems like Linux-musl or the BSD family shouldn't add that much overhead.

The current stated goals for FOSS-VG for now are as follows:
